This year, for our Black History Month Program, kindergarten was challenged to choose a local person to honor who has made strides in the black community. Ms. Sanchez’s class, with Ms. People’s help, decided to honor Waco Fire Chief Bobby Tatum, the first African America to become and make history as the fire chief of Waco, Texas.

We invited Chief Tatum to come to our class for Black History week and without hesitation, he accepted our invitation. He came baring gifts for the children of JH Hines. Later, he returned hosting a pizza party for our class.

Chief Tatum began his work with the Fort Worth Fire Department at the tender age of 19 in 1985. He worked his way up through the ranks to become the fire chief in Waco. We solute Fire Chief Tatum for his efforts and determination- making him a hero and role model for young people.
